Medicine Anthropology Theory MAT is online

Medicine Anthropology Theory is an English-language, open-access journal that publishes scholarly articles, essays, reviews, and reports related to medical anthropology and science and technology studies.

Origins

MAT (‘em-ay-tee’) is both a continuation and a departure from its predecessor, Medische Antropologie, which was published out of Amsterdam from 1989–2012. Like Medische AntropologieMAT seeks to balance the larger field by foregrounding work by non-American scholars. Based in Amsterdam and Paris, MAT is supported by an expanded international advisory board.

Review process and publication schedule

Scholarly articles undergo a double-blind peer review process, which typically takes twelve weeks from the time of submission. All other contributions are reviewed by our editorial team. Please see our submission guidelines for more information on the kinds of contributions we seek.

We publish material on an ongoing basis. Three times a year  (April, August, and December) published material is paginated and grouped into an issue.

Aims and scope

MAT has four principal objectives. The first is to provide a forum for top-notch scholarship in medical anthropology, the anthropology of biomedicine, and critical global health studies. The second is to engage ‘applied’ anthropologists (many of whom work in the global South, and are typically employed in global health projects rather than academic institutions) in theoretical and political debates. The third is to rethink classical anthropological theory (kinship, exchange, ritual, the state, etc.) in light of contemporary ethnographic scholarship on biomedicine and health. The final objective is to try to move medical anthropology and global health firmly beyond a politics of bare life.

Indexing and archiving

Upon the launch of the first issue in December 2014, the editors will submit the necessary paperwork to be assigned a new ISSN, and begin the process of having the journal indexed or included by EBSCO, CrossRef, PubMed, and the Directory of Open Access Journals. Each article, review, think piece, and photo essay will be assigned a DOI. Please check back here as this webpage will be updated once each agency approves our request. Each issue will be archived using CLOCKSS.
